Frequently Asked Questions

What is the professional definition of coaching?

The International Coach Federation (ICF) defines coaching as partnering with clients in a thought-provoking and creative process that inspires them to maximize their personal and professional potential.

Is coaching therapy?

No, coaching is a distinct service and differs greatly from therapy, consulting, mentoring or training. The coach acts as a facilitator by asking the right questions so the client can access his/her own wisdom. Coaching is future and solution-oriented and assists clients in designing a happy life that has purpose and meaning while utilizing their talents, honoring their values and defining their wants.

Who hires a life coach?

My clients come from all walks of life but have two things in common: they want to enjoy life more fully and are willing to do whatever it takes to be even happier and successful. They range from high-performing individuals who want life balance to newly-graduated college students who need transitional guidance and support.

Why does coaching work?

Coaches are there to support you, motivate you, keep you focused on your goals, encourage you when you have setbacks and celebrate your successes. The coach partners with you to keep you accountable, on track and moving forward. It works because the coach holds your vision while together you work out the details. Every successful athlete and business person has a coach and now it is accessible to everyone.

Is the coach-client relationship confidential?

Yes, trust is the cornerstone of the coaching relationship. I will never sell, rent or trade your personal information with anyone. With your permission, I would include your name, phone number and email address on my client log for credentialing purposes with the ICF so they can verify my coaching hours for additional certifications.

What is a coaching session like?

Coaching sessions are conveniently done over the phone. We schedule the dates and times of the sessions, and you call me at the agreed-upon time. In preparation for that session, you may send me an email the day before with topics you want to discuss and what you want to focus on.

How long is a coaching session?

Typically coaching sessions are 45 minutes long. You are not paying for the amount of time such as when receiving a massage. Rather you are seeking insights, strategies and shifts, which might happen in less time, so it is important to end the call when the next step is for you to commence the action part of the coaching. There will be email follow-ups to assess progress.

What is the time commitment?

That depends on your goals. Most people commit for three to six months with three sessions per month and then periodically schedule a coaching session for a specific goal or decision within the context of their life plan.

How will I grow through the coaching process?

Throughout the coaching process, you will learn about yourself, your strengths, your beliefs, areas for improvements and the power of choices. As you begin to see the benefits working in one area, it will motivate you to improve in other areas of your life. How much you grow will depend on you.

What can I expect from coaching?

In the coaching relationship, you can expect to experience fresh perspectives on personal challenges and opportunities, increased interpersonal effectiveness, enhanced thinking and decision-making skills, increased confidence in accomplishing your goals and a stronger connection between your heart and mind.

What is expected of me as the client?

I expect you to have an open heart and mind, be honest in your answers, arrive at sessions on time, pay before the sessions commence and be committed to making life-changing shifts.

What if we don't click together as coach and client?

The coaching relationship is built on good communication, trust and a willingness to expand beyond your present horizons. It is your responsibility to communicate to me any negative feelings that would hinder your progress toward your goals and happiness. If we cannot resolve the issue and create a positive coaching experience, you are free to terminate the coaching relationship with a full refund for any remaining sessions.
